Harbor Springs Community Pool

Harbor Inc. was asked by Harbor Springs Public Schools to assess public sentiment regarding a possible alternative source of funding for the pool at the high school. The working group convened three focus groups and conducted two surveys. The project was conducted on a largely volunteer basis and no school funds were expended.

Safe Routes to School and the Hoyt Trail

Harbor Inc. coordinated with local governments, Harbor Springs Public Schools, and the Emmet County Road Commission to obtain funding through the Michigan Safe Routes to School Program and received the award for construction of the approximately 1-mile trail along the west side of Hoyt Road extending from Lake Street to just north of Quick Road.

Hoyt Trail is a nearly one-mile trail on the west side of Hoyt Road. The sidewalk portion of the trail starts from an existing sidewalk just north of Lake Street to the Harbor Springs City limits at Pete’s Run where a 10-foot wide trail begins extending to just north of Quick Road at Forest Way in the Forest Ridge Development.

The Safe Routes to School award also included funding for encouragement activities (Walking School Bus, pedometers, walking/biking logbooks) within the school system. This program was supplemented with funds awarded from the Petoskey Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation to address safety when walking/biking to school and other encouraging activities.
